1873 - Modern Domesday Book

The England & Wales, Return of Owners of Land, 1873, was informally known as the ‘Modern Domesday Book’. It was published in 1873 in two volumes and recorded details of all owners of land of one acre and over.

The information includes the name and home address of each person, as well as the size of their Norfolk lands, and its rentable value.

Unfortunately it does not list where the land was, just where the owner lived. In a few cases there is a place in brackets, eg: (Fersfield), which indicates that this is a ‘guess’ as to the residence, presumably taken from where the land was situated. There were probably some area entries which added together all the different pieces of land in Norfolk owned by the named person.

In some entries are items contained within square brackets, eg: [Charles], and are notes from the transcriber. Hopefully these are all correct but this cannot be 100% guaranteed.

The heading for the County of Norfolk shows a 1871 population of 438,656 for Norfolk, with 99,428 inhabited houses and 740 parishes.
