The Debtors and Creditors of Jeremiah Beales were advised 6th March 1840 that all his Effects had been assigned to Edward D. Alston and James Carver, both of Diss, for the Mutual Benefit of his Creditors. Mr. Beales was described as a Beer-house Keeper and Butcher.

There was no objection to the licence being referred at the East Harling Brewster Sessions held Monday 12th February 1906. With a population of 600 and 5 fully licensed houses in the parish, the house was deemed to be surplus.
Licence renewal refused 21st June 1906 and referred to Compensation.

Notice to Debtors and Creditors.
WHEREAS JEREMIAH BEALES, of North Lopham, in the county of Norfolk, Beer-house Keeper and BUTCHER, hath Assigned over all his Effects to Edward D. Alston and James Calver, both of Diss, in the county of Norfolk, for the Mutual Benefit of such of his Creditors who shall Execute the Deed of Assignment within Three Calendar Months from the date hereof; - Notice is hereby Given, that the said Deed is now lying at the Brewery, in Diss, for the inspection and signature of the said Creditors, and such of them as shall not Execute the Deed within the time limited, will be excluded from all benefit arising therefrom. All Persons who stand indebted to the said Jeremiah Beales, are required to pay the same to the said Assignees forthwith.

Jeremiah BEALES, 41, butcher and beer seller, born in North Lopham, living with wife Elizabeth (40, butcher and beer seller), children Thirza (19), Jeremiah (12, tailor’s apprentice) and Mary (6), and lodger Samuel PORTER (widower, 74, drover) , address The Green, North Lopham. [Jeremiah BEALES, son of Jeremiah and Mary, was born on 18 Aug 1809 in North Lopham, and baptised there on 4 Feb 1810. He married Elizabeth Buckenham on 12 Oct 1831 at North Lopham. He died in 1951 aged 42, whilst living at the Black Horse Inn, registered 1851 Q3 Guiltcross Norfolk Vol 13 Page 117.]

1861 Census

Thomas REEVE, 44, Innkeeper, born in North Lopham, living with wife Elizabeth (50) and children Agnes (7, scholar) and Jeremiah (23, linen weaver journeyman), daughter and son-in-law Adelaide EDWARDS (29) and Alfred EDWARDS (30, agricultural labourer), and their children Emma EDWARDS (8, scholar) and Austin (6, scholar). [Thomas was born in North Lopham in 1817 and was christened there on 13 Oct 1817. His first marriage was to Mary Ann BOWELL (1822-1842) on 12 Fen 1840 in North Lopham. Soon after Mary Ann’s death he married Ann BOWEN (1822-1852). Thomas, again a widower, married after banns Elizabeth BUCKENHAM (1911-1879), also a widow, on 16 May 1853 in North Lopham. He died in Swaffham, living at Station Street, in 1904 aged 87, registered 1904 Q4 Swaffham Norfolk Vol 4B Page 216, and was buried on 10 Dec 1904.]

“BEALES Jeremiah Edward. 2 June. The Will of Jeremiah Edward Beales late of North Lopham in the County of Norfolk Licensed Victualler who died 10 March 1876 at North Lopham was proved at Norwich by Grace Beales of North Lopham Widow the Relict one of the Executors. Effects under £100.”

[Jeremiah was the son of a previous landlord of the Black Horse, also Jeremiah Beales. He was born on 2 Jul 1837 in North Lopham, and was baptised there on 2 Jul 1837, parents given as Jeremiah (butcher) and Elizabeth. He married by licence to Grace HUGHES (1836 – 1919) at St. Peter’s Church in Bethnal Green on 10 Jul 1867; marriage licence granted on 8 Jul 1867. Grace was a Welsh girl and by 1891 she had returned Wales – she continued to run the pub after Jeremiah’s death. Jeremiah died on 10 Mar 1876 in North Lopham.]

Lot 2, a piece of rich ARABLE LAND, called “Coates,” containing 1a. 0r. 36p., in the occupation of Mr. Pearce, adjoining the road leading from North Lopham Church to Garboldisham.

[RG11 Piece 1973 Folio 57 Page 28 Schedule 146]

[Grace was born in Betws-y-coed, Caenarvonshire on 7 Jun 1836 and was baptised on 27 Jun at the Congregational Chapel in Cappel Garmon, Denbyshire. She was married to Jeremiah Beales, the previous landlord. She died on 17 Aug 1917.]

1891 Census

Harvey WHITE, 63, licensed victualler, living with wife Fanny (50) and children Eva D (13, scholar) and Percy H (10, scholar), Black Horse Inn, The Street, North Lopham. [RG12 Piece 1548 Folio 115 Page 11 Schedule 87]

[Harvey, son of William and Sarah (nee FRY), was born in 1827 in Pitton, Wiltshire, and baptised there on 29 Apr. His first marriage was to Elizabeth HATCHETT in Southampton on 31 May 1849.He later married Fanny Dickason on 30 Mar 1875 in Easton, Norfolk. Thomas died in Norwich in 1919, aged 92, registered 1919, Q2 Norwich Norfolk Vol 4B Page 163.]

1901 Census

Herbert Frederick HUTSON, 39, innkeeper, born in North Lopham, living with wife Ellen (40) and children Florence Ellen (15, living at home). Horace Frederick (11, scholar), Herbert Edward (8, scholar) and Sidney Arthur (6, scholar), address Black Horse Inn, The Village, North Lopham. [RG13 Piece 1866 Folio 10 Page 11 Schedule 80]

[Herbert Frederick HUTSON was born in North Lopham in 1862 and baptised there on 10 May, parents Richard (farmer) and Louisa. He died in 1947 in North Lopham aged 84, and buried there on 28 Aug 1947.]
