Oliver Edward BOWELL, son of Frederick William BOWELL (c. 1868-c. 1948) and Alice Gertrude HOLDEN (c. 1871-c. 1907), was born on 30 October 1893 in North Lopham, Norfolk. He was baptised on 24 April 1898 in North Lopham - parents Frederick William (farmer) and Alice Gertrude. He was attested on 14 Feb 1916 and placed on the Reserve List the following day. On 29 Mar 1916 he was called up and the following day posted to the The Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent) Regiment, Private G/21067. He left the U.K. on 17 Jul 1916 and joined the British Expeditionary Force on 18 Jul 1916. Oliver was sent to Italy on 12 Dec 1917, returning to France on 1 Apr 1918. On 3 Feb 1919 he left France via Dunkirk to return to the U.K. He was transferred to the Class “Z” Army Reserve on 6 March 1919, to return to Poplar Farm, South Lopham. He died on 25 May 1977 in South Lopham - aged 83 years. He is commorated in the Churchyard in South Lopham- ”In / loving memory of / OLIVER EDWARD BOWELL / died 25th May 1977 / aged 83 years / and of his loving wife / FLORENCE / died 6th April 1978 / aged 80 years / At rest”.
