2x great grandparents children (8)
• James was born on 14th February 1826 in Shelfanger and baptised there on 3rd July 1826. He was listed on the 1841 and 1851 Census Returns as living with his parents in Wymondham where by 1851 he was a shoemaker. He married Elizabeth Trixon (1823 – 1899) on 1st January 1857. The 1861 Census sees James living in Pottergate Street in Norwich, a shoemaker and shopkeeper, with wife Elizabeth. About 1867, he became the publican of the Cock Inn on Upper St. Giles Street in Norwich, which he took over from his brother George who left to take on the Black Horse on Earlham Road. In 1891 he was still listed as the publican of the Cock Inn. It is thought he left The Cock in 1899 (when wife Elizabeth died) and in the 1901 Census was a visitor in the household of Ann Smith (as there were Smiths in the family so it was probably with one of them). In 1911 he was an old aged pensioner boarding at the house of Jane Elizabeth Race in Wymondham. He died in 1916, probably in Wymondham.
• George was born in Wymondham in 28th November 1827, baptised there on 14th September 1828 and in 1841 was living with his parents in Pople Street, Wymondham. In 1851, the Census shows him as a drover lodging at The Crown Inn, Bridge Street, Sutton St Mary, Lincolnshire, with John PEACOCK, not known to be a relative. He married Sarah HOWES (1838 - 1913) on 4th November 1855 in Norwich. By 1861 he was an innkeeper in St Giles Street, Norwich, thought to be The Cock Inn (later taken over by his brother James) living there with his wife and 2 children, George William (1856 - 1887) and Ellis (1858 - 1898) and a live-in house servant Amelia E PEACOCK (again not known to be a relative). Around 1867 he moved to the Black Horse, Earlham Road, Norwich, where in 1871 was again living with wife and 2 sons, and was still there in 1881. He died on 19th July 1884 in Norwich. There is his memorial in Earlham cemetery, “George PEACOCK who died 19th July 1884 aged 58 years Also his son George William PEACOCK who died January 12th 1887 aged 30 years”. His estate was probated on 24th September 1884, “PEACOCK George. 24 September. The Will of George Peacock late of Earlham-road Heigham in the County of the City of Norwich Innkeeper who died 19 July 1884 at Earlham-road was proved at Norwich by Sarah Peacock of Earlham-road Widow the Relict one of the Executors. Personal Estate £127 5s. 1d”. His widow, Sarah, continued to run the Black Horse until about 1902. She was a lady companion to an Emily Harden living at 14 Alexandra Road, Norwich as given on the 1911 Census. She died on 3rd February 1913 and her estate was probated on 28th February 1913, “PEACOCK Sarah of 14 Alexandra-road Norwich widow died 3 February 1913 Administration (with Will) London 28 February to Leonard Woodbine Peacock grocer's assistant. Effects £28 7s. 1d”.
• Walter was born in Wymondham in 10th August 1829, baptised there on 25th September 1835, and 1841 Census showed him living with his parents in Pople Street, Wymondham (originally missed off the Census but added at the end of the schedule!). In 1857 he married Hannah Baker and they had one known child James (1857 - 1923). He worked on the land and around 1880 had his own farm of 70 acres employing a labourer and a boy. He died in 1894.
• Rhoda was born in Wymondham in 12th July 1834, baptised there on 25th September 1835, and 1841 Census showed her living with his parents in Pople Street, Wymondham. Again, living with parents in the 1851 Census, she was a dressmaker. On 4th June 1857 Rhoda married David Wade (1831 - 1902) and they had 15 children between 1858 and 1881. From about 1866 she lived at the Bricklayers Arms in Wicklewood, where husband David was the licencee and a farmer; ownership of the pub was held by William Wade up to 1877 when the title passed to the Earl of Kimberley, the local landowner. They left the pub around 1883 but remained in Wicklewood with David undertaking labouring employment. David died in 1902 and Rhoda in 1906.
• Ellis was born in Wymondham on 2nd May 1831 and was baptised there on 25th September 1835. The 1841 Census showed him living with his parents and 4 siblings in Pople Street, Wymondham and still there in 1851 but with the occupation of drover. He married Sarah Hubbard (1838 - 1914) in 1856, registered in Forehoe, Norfolk, and in 1861, with his wife and three children, was living with his mother-in-law Sarah Hubbard (nee Batson, 1804 - ?) in Wymondham at the public house she ran, The Three Feathers. In 1868 he takes over as the landlord at the Three Feathers and 1871 Census lists him as an innkeeper and also a butcher. An Edward Peacock is listed as the landlord in 1872, not a known relative, so presumably he had left by then. The next time we find him is in the 1881 Census in 73, Bridge Street, Heap, Bury, Lancashire with his wife and six children, with the occupation of carter. He died in 1889. Sarah died in 1914, registered in Oldham, Lancashire. Ellis and Sarah's children were Emms (1858 - ?), Harriet (1859 - ?), Martha Ann (1860 - 1912), Agnes (1863 - 1929), Laura (1864 - 1932), Edith (1869 - 1954), Mary A (1870 - ?), Walter (1874 - ?) and Ellen (1878 - 1961).
• William (my great grandfather ) was born in Wymondham in 1837 and was baptised there on 19th March 1837. In 1851 he was a live-in servant in the household of James Neave (farmer) in Downham Grove, Wymondham. By 1861 he had joined the Metropolitan Police and the Census shows him as a police constable, living at Metropolitan Police Station, 22, King Street, St Margaret, Westminster, London; presumably this was a residence centre as there we about 50 other officers at the same address. He married Agnes Hannah Pattinson on 25th December 1863, banns read on 29th November, and 6th and 13th December, in St. Margaret’s parish, Westminster. He was living at Lower Old Police Court, Kennington Lane, London in 1871, now a Police Inspector, with his wife Agnes and 4 children, Agnes Emma, Frances Emma, William Robert and Walter Joseph. He appears in several newspapers and gazettes as giving evidence in court cases including at the Old Bailey. At some time before 1881 he was injured in the line of duty and retired from the Police Force. By 1881 he had returned to Norfolk, to Southrepps, and was an assistant overseer and school attendance officer, living with wife Agnes and 6 of his children. He died around the 2nd quarter of 1884.

• Agnes Ellen was born in 1864 in Westminster, London, living at home with her parents in 1871. She was a live-in housemaid in the house of Henry Robert Scott, a barrister, in 1881 and was a live-in domestic servant, house maid, at Osborne House, Kings Quay, Whippingham on the Isle of Wight. In 1893 she married Harry Charles Moore (1868 - 1924) in Cowes, Isle of Wight. The Censuses of 1901 and 1911 shows her living in Cowes with her husband who was in the engineering and shipbuilding industry. Harry died in 1924 and she in 1926.
• Frances Emma was born on 12th October 1864 and baptised on 20th November 1864 in St. John the Evangelist Church, Smith Square, Westminster. She returned to Norfolk with the family and was in Southrepps in 1881. The family was asked about her but the only thing that materialised was that some thought she ‘went missing’ for some time and no-one knew where she went. One clue is that there was an Frances Emma found in the 1901 Scottish Census who was a lady’s maid to Elizabeth E Home in Bontryl Lodge, Bunkle & Preston, Berwickshire. One family member did say there was a family association with the family of Sir Alec Douglas-Home but how did she get this post? (Perhaps this is a red herring but it‘s the only one we have!) Nothing else was found until she appeared in the 1939 Register living at 2 Market Place, North Walsham with her sister Constance Louise, a tabacconist with her own shop, and her illigitimate daughter Mary Strover PEACOCK (1917 - 1988) fathered by George Wallace STROVER who was stationed on the Norfolk coast during WW1. Frances Emma died in 1954.
• William Robert was born in 1864 in Westminster, London, living at home with her parents in 1871. Like some of her siblings she returned to Norfolk with the family and was in Southrepps in 1881. He was living with his mother in 1891, father had died in 1884, and was a carpenter. He married Winifred Lucy Healey (1872 - 1925) on 27 December 1894 in North Walsham, she was a music teacher. They had two daughters, Dorothy Alice Lilian (1897 - 1976) and Iris Pauline (1899 - 1991). The 1901 and 1911 Census returns shows him and his wife living at Market Place, North Walsham, he was still a carpenter/joiner. He died at The Norfolk and Norwich Hospital on 23rd March 1925. His estate was probated on 6th May 1925; “PEACOCK William Robert of North Walsham Norfolk died 23 March 1925 at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital Norwich Administration Norwich 6 May to Winifred Lucy Peacock widow. Effects £233 3s. 4d”. Winifred Lucy died on 7th August 1925 in North Walsham.

He married Florence Harriet WILSON (1870 – 1953) in 1906 and by the time of the 1911 census was living in Middleton with his wife and 2 eldest sons, William Wilson and Albert Pattinson, and was the stationmaster there. Her father and grandfather, also William, were builders and by the Census of 1891 she was clerk to her father's business. In 1906 she married Albert George. She died in 1st January 1953 whilst living at Alberta, The Broadway, Heacham.
