Parish Dole Balance Sheets

In this context the word Dole means a charitable money gift or provision of goods. The local charity committee will take what monies they currently have control over and allocate or ‘dole’ out money to those deemed most needy or deserving of such an act of charity. As well as money, the charity was often given in goods; eg: food, fuel, clothing or sometimes children's education.

* Being one half of the net Rent of old Town Land left by Roger Dale, and directed by Charity Commissioners’ Scheme of 1889, “to be applied by the Trustees at their discretion to any purpose for the General Benefit of the Parish of Shelfanger, or of the inhabitants thereof, subject to the approval of the said Commissioners.” This approval has been given. There is now £2 1 7 in the Pump Fund.
† It will be see that expenditure exceeds income £5 10 10½, again reducing Balance as resolved by Trustees.
