The 1911 Census shows the licensee of the Dolphin to be Edith Mary Southgate. She, unmarried surname Reeve, was the daughter of a previous landlord. Upon her marriage in 1907 she relinquished the license to her husband but took it back in 1909 following his assaults on her.

LICENSING.
The license of the Dolphin Inn, Diss, was endorsed from Edith Mary Southgate, nee Reeve, to Charles Edgar Southgate, her husband, until the next transfer day.

Charles Edgar Southgate, Diss, innkeeper, was charged with assaulting Edith Mary Southgate, his wife, at Diss, on 12th March. Complainant stated she had been persistantly ill-treated by her husband almost from the time of their marriage. On the above date he came into the room where she had prepared tea and struck her a violent blow in the back. She ran into another room, defendant following her and threatening he would “do” for her. Since that date he had again ill-treated her and threatened her life. Defendant pleaded guilty, and was fined £1, and 10s. costs. Complainant thereupon made an application for a separation order, which the Bench granted, defendant to pay 10s. per week, and Mrs. Southgate to have charge of the two children.

OBITUARIES IN TOWN AND VILLAGE
MRS. E. M. SOUTHGATE(Formerly of DISS)
The funeral took place on Monday at Diss Cemetery of Mrs. Edith Mary Southgate, who was for many years at the Dolphin Inn.
Mrs. Southgate, who was 81, went to live with her daughter 1q2 years ago and died in a nursing home.
The Rector of Diss, the Rev. L. O. Kenyon, conducted the service.
The family mourners were: Mr. and Mrs. T. Baldwin, daughter and son-in-law; Mr. and Mrs. G. Turkentine, daughter and son-in-law; Miss F. Chenery, niece; Mrs. H. Gillons, niece.
Friends present were: Mr. W. Warnes (representing Youngs and Crawshaw), Mr. A. I. Pipe, Mr. and Mrs. A. Pipe, Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Brown, Mrs. M. Steggles, Mrs. A. Steggles, Mrs. M. Ship, Miss D. Abborough, Mr. W. Kemp.
