** The expression “tag” used above refers to word or words that exemplify the content of the record; e.g.: a tag of ‘portrait’ would signify an image shows a person or persons within it as a main subject. Note: a single record can have more than one tag.
*** Some documents relate to specific named (surnamed) people. Search for specific surname or part names.
**** Many documents are very difficult to date or they may relate to a date range. This search will find documents where either the earliest date for the document is known or it is an approximation.
Tags: if you want to find a specific tag, tick the box Exact full tag - if you just use the word, eg: farm, then any tag including farm will be found, eg: [farm], [farming], [farm house], [farmer], etc.
Example “tags” - An image of a family outside a church following a marriage could have four tags: church, family, marriage, and the family name. Searching creatively on tags can yield some useful results.
Wildcards - these are symbols that denote an unknown part of a string; % indicates 0, 1 or more characters and _ (underscore) a single character in a search. For example, using 'sm_th' will find smith and smyth. Also, remember that the chosen pattern of letters and wildcards can be anywhere in the field, eg: in surname, ST%L (or lower case) will find STarLing, conSTabLe, STeeLe, paSTaL, etc. Wildcards cannot be used in number or date fields.
