| Military: | Friday was attested into the Army on 29 January 1885 and on 3 February joined the Royal Artillery, service no. 46935. He served at home until 19 October 1886 when he went to India, serving there for 5 years and 85 days, returning to home soil on 12 January 1892. On 16 January 1892 he extended his service to 12 years. He became a gunner in the Field Artillery on 1 February 1893 upon reorganisation. There is a note that on 18 September 1893 he was awaiting trial and at a Court Marshall in London on 26 September he was imprisoned. No clear indication has been found as to what the offence or punishment was but it may have been drunkenness and imprisonment for 14 days. Friday further extended his service on 21 January 1892 to 21 years but on 31 May 1897 he was discharged when he had completed his 12 years, and 123 days, service. |
