NORFOLK NEWS, 29 November 1902 - TIVETSHALL. The collections made in the two parish churches on Sunday on behalf of the family of John Ludkin, platelayer, whose accidental death we recently recorded, together with one or two small outside subscriptions realised the sum of £3.
NORWICH MERCIRY, 19 November 1902 - PLATELAYER KILLED AT TIVETSHALL. Owing to the temporary closing of the Trowse bridge, special fish and other trains were dispatched from Yarmouth and Lowestoft to Norwich on Thursday last week via the Waveney Valley Branch and Tivetshall Junction. The driver of a train which arrived at Tivetshall about 11 p.m. reported to the station officials that he had just seen what appeared to be the body of a man on the permanent way. Elvin, a porter, and Crisp, the driver of the water supply engine, immediately started for the spot indicated, which was the curve which connects the Waveney Valley line with the Colchester main line, a few yards south of Tivetshall station. Here they found the body of John Ludkin, aged about 35, a platelayer in the Tivetshall gang, whose home was one of the level crossing gate-houses between Tivetshall and Pulham Market. The body was shockingly multilated, and had evidently been struck by the buffer of an engine on the left shoulder. The shoulder itself was in a terrible state, and the arm was severed just above the left wrist. A bag containing about a bushel of wheat, which the deceased had been carrying, stood by the side of the body uninjured. The County Coroner (Mr. H. R. Culley) held an inquest on Friday. The evidence showed that the deceased left the Railway Hotel at Tivetshall shortly before 9.30 and went along the line towards his home. R. M. Guyton, a signalman, said in moving a trolley near the signal box, a parcel of boots, addressed to the deceased, was found. Witness thought it was probable that the parcel was left for the deceased to pick up but he apparently did not do so. A train from the branch line arrived at 9.57, a few minutes after Ludkin had passed, and witness was of the opinion that deceased was knocked down. It was a special train in consequence of the block at Trowse. Deceased knew the line was being kept open for traffic. Other evidence having been taken a verdict of "Accidental death" was returned.
